Adobe’s September 2026 “what’s new” post for Firefly buries a change that’s easy to skim past: GPT Image 2, one of the partner models available inside Firefly’s Image Generation tool and in Firefly Boards, now supports 10 aspect ratios instead of the 3 it launched with.
What changed
Before this update, generating with GPT Image 2 inside Firefly meant picking from a short list of ratios. Enough for a quick square or landscape image, not enough to hit a specific ad unit, story format, or print size without cropping afterward. Adobe calls the expansion one of several “highly requested enhancements” delivered this month, alongside a background-removal feature for video (we’re covering that separately). Adobe’s also still asking for feedback on whether people want more ratios, so 10 probably isn’t the final number.
Why it matters for designers
Aspect ratio support sounds like a minor UI detail until you’re the one re-generating an image for the fourth time because the model only outputs square crops. If you’re producing assets across multiple placements, a hero banner, a social tile, a story frame, from a single prompt or reference, more native ratio options means fewer wasted generations and less manual recropping (with its usual side effects: awkward subject placement, dead space, a composition that only worked at the original ratio).
It’s a small efficiency gain, but it’s the kind of gap that shows up constantly in real production work. It’s also a reasonable sign that Adobe is treating GPT Image 2 as a first-class option inside Firefly rather than a bolted-on extra.
What to watch out for
The announcement doesn’t spell out exactly which 10 ratios are supported, or whether all of them are available on every plan tier. Worth checking directly in the product before you rely on a specific one being there. We haven’t hands-on tested this yet, so the “before you use it” panel in the sidebar is a list of open questions, not confirmed answers. We’ll follow up with a Test once we’ve put the expanded ratio list through an actual production task.
